Kanda Matsuri
Kanda Matsuri is the festival of Kanda Myojin Shrine, traditionally counted among Edo (old Tokyo)'s three great festivals alongside Sanno Matsuri and Fukagawa Matsuri. Its full grand procession (Shinkosai), a parade of roughly 300 people in Heian and Edo-period costume escorting three mikoshi through the shrine's historic parish, is held in odd-numbered years in mid-May; even years bring smaller-scale festivities without the full procession. The route winds through Kanda, Nihonbashi, Otemachi, and Akihabara, an unusual pairing of centuries-old ritual with Tokyo's modern financial and pop-culture districts. On the festival's peak weekend, roughly 100 more mikoshi from local neighborhoods are also carried and blessed at the shrine. Kanda Myojin has watched over merchants and the city's financial center since the Edo period, and the festival is considered a prayer for prosperity and protection. Because grand-procession years alternate, visitors should confirm ahead whether a given year features the full parade or the reduced-scale version.

Practical tips
- The full Shinkosai grand procession only happens in odd-numbered years; check the shrine's official announcement before planning a trip specifically for the parade.
- Kanda Myojin sits right by Akihabara, so a festival visit pairs naturally with a stop in the anime/electronics district.
- The procession route passes near Tokyo Station and Otemachi, both easily reached, making it simple to catch part of the parade even with limited time.
- Arrive early on the main procession day; the narrow shrine approach gets crowded quickly.
