Miyajima Kangensai Boat Festival

Kangensai is the summer boat festival of Itsukushima Shrine on Miyajima, and the shrine counts it among the three great boat festivals of Japan. It follows the old lunar calendar — the seventeenth day of the sixth lunar month — so the date shifts each year and falls somewhere between mid-July and mid-August. The festival is timed to the tide. In the evening the deities are transferred to a decorated barge, three boats are lashed together, and the procession is rowed out from the shrine and along the coast to associated shrines and back, with court musicians on board playing gagaku: the flutes, reed pipes and strings that give the festival its name. Lanterns line the boats, the water reflects the great vermilion torii, and the fleet returns through the shrine's sea gate at high tide. The origin is attributed to Taira no Kiyomori, who is said to have moved the aristocratic boating music of the Heian court onto the sea here in the twelfth century.

Practical tips

  • Because the timing follows the tide and the lunar calendar, the schedule is published by the shrine rather than fixed to a weekend. Confirm the hour on the official annual events page before planning the day.
  • The last ferries back to the mainland are the practical constraint. Staying overnight in a Miyajima ryokan lets you watch the return of the boats without watching the clock, but island lodging is limited and books out early.
  • Bring a light layer and insect repellent: much of the evening is spent waiting on the shore or the pier while the procession is away visiting other shrines.
  • The island is worth a full day either side — Itsukushima Shrine, Mount Misen and the Daisho-in temple complex are all within walking or ropeway distance.
