Otaru Snow Light Path (Yuki Akari no Michi)
The Otaru Snow Light Path is a quiet counterpoint to the Sapporo Snow Festival, held annually for about ten days in February in the old port town of Otaru and usually overlapping the Sapporo dates. Since 1999, volunteers have filled the town with small candles rather than giant sculptures: floating glass buoy lights drift on the Otaru Canal beside the stone warehouses, hand-hollowed snow lanterns line the disused Temiya railway line, and shopping streets and side alleys carry displays made by residents, schools and shop owners. There is no admission fee and no single centrepiece; the appeal is the accumulated effect of thousands of ordinary flames against brick, snowbanks and black canal water, with the town's gas lamps and Meiji-era architecture behind them. Volunteers from Japan and abroad are recruited each year to light and tend the candles at dusk and put them out at closing. Otaru is close enough to Sapporo to visit as an evening trip.

Practical tips
- Come at dusk rather than full night: the blue hour over the canal with the candles already lit is the shot most visitors want.
- The canal path and the Temiya line are unpaved snow and ice in places, so wear boots with grip and keep a hand free for balance.
- Trains back to Sapporo are busy on festival evenings; check the return timetable before you settle in for dinner in Otaru.
- Volunteer places for lighting and tending the candles are open to overseas visitors and are recruited in advance each year.
