Takayama Spring Festival (Sanno Matsuri)

The Takayama Spring Festival, formally the Sanno Matsuri of Hie Shrine, is one half of the Takayama Festival, widely ranked among Japan's three most beautiful festivals alongside Kyoto's Gion Matsuri and Chichibu's Yomatsuri. Held every year on fixed dates, April 14 and 15, in the historic Hida-Takayama district of Gifu Prefecture, it celebrates the arrival of spring with a procession of ornately lacquered and gilded yatai floats, several of which carry mechanical marionettes (karakuri ningyo) that perform choreographed routines powered entirely by strings and gears. Up to a dozen floats, each maintained by a different neighborhood for centuries, are pulled through Takayama's preserved Edo-period streets by day. After dark, roughly 100 lanterns are attached to the floats for the Yomatsuri evening parade, one of the festival's most photographed moments. A second, autumn edition of the Takayama Festival (Hachiman Matsuri) is held in October at a different shrine, so visitors should confirm which season's festival they are booking around.

Practical tips

  • The floats and karakuri marionette performances are the highlight; check the daily schedule on arrival, as performance times and locations vary by float and day.
  • The evening lantern-lit Yomatsuri procession on the night of April 14 draws large crowds; arrive early for a curbside spot.
  • Takayama's old town is compact and walkable, but April evenings can still be cold, so pack a warm layer.
  • Accommodation in Takayama books out well ahead of the festival dates; reserve lodging early or consider staying in nearby Gifu or Nagoya and day-tripping in.
