Tenjin Matsuri
Tenjin Matsuri is the summer festival of Osaka Tenmangu Shrine, held in honour of Sugawara no Michizane, the Heian-era scholar worshipped as the deity of learning. It recurs on the same two days in late July every year and is counted among Japan's three great festivals. The first day is quiet and ritual; the second is the spectacle. In the afternoon a land procession of some three thousand people in Heian court dress, with drums, umbrella dancers and portable shrines, leaves the shrine and crosses the city on foot. At dusk the procession transfers to boats: around a hundred vessels move up and down the Okawa River carrying musicians, dancers and the deity's palanquin, lit by bonfires on the water, while thousands of fireworks are launched overhead. Spectators watch free from the riverbanks and bridges; paid riverside seating and dinner boats are sold in advance. The festival traces back to the tenth century, and the pairing of river procession and fireworks has defined an Osaka summer for generations.

Practical tips
- The riverbanks around Sakuranomiya fill up hours before the fireworks start. If you want a spot on the grass rather than a wall of backs, arrive in the late afternoon with a mat.
- Reserve a hotel in Osaka well ahead: late July overlaps with school holidays and other regional festivals, and central Umeda and Namba rooms are the first to go.
- Paid grandstand tickets and dinner-cruise seats for the boat procession are released in advance and sell out. Buy through official channels rather than at the gate.
- Trains out of Sakuranomiya and Temmabashi are severely congested once the fireworks end. Walking twenty minutes to a station further along the line is usually faster than queueing.
