In order to make Muslim tourists to Japan enjoy kimono more, Kyoto Kimono Rental Yumeyakata, a kimono rental shop in Kyoto, produced hijabs (scarfs for Muslim women to cover their heads or bodies) using Japanese designs, which are suitable for kimono. The rental plan of the hijabs has been started since early February in 2019.
Kimono Rental Yumeyakata, the kimono rental shop, currently provides service for Muslim tourists to Japan, such as a prayer room and information of some halal restaurants. The shop has started producing and renting Japanese design hijabs made by small pieces of kimono, which left over when making kimono, in order to enhance the service for Muslim tourists more. The rental service was born to meet the customers’ requests, which was enjoying combinations between kimonos and hijabs suitable for them.
About 20 types of various Japanese design hijabs were produced to enjoy a combination suitable for seasons. Their lineup includes typical Japanese designs, such as, cherry blossom and round patterns consist of snow crystals’ outlines (yukiwamonyou). The designs and kimono cloths were selected through discussions led mainly by a Muslim staff of the shop. After this, the number of types will be increased to 50 or so. They plan to add summer hijabs using laces or the like in the hot season.
Now they offer a special rental plan to commemorate starting the rental service. By the plan, you can rent a hijab at a campaign price, in 300 Japanese yen (tax excluded) instead of the normal price (500 yen).
Under today’s situation that Muslim style dressing up, which was enjoying coordinating hijabs with patterns of clothes, attracts people’s attention, the shop help stylish Muslim women to enjoy travel in Kyoto to the fullest by producing hijabs for them.

The shop used to be a townhouse called kyomachiya with 100 years history. The townhouse was reformed and became the present elegant shop building, which is popular on special occasion, such as, an anniversary.
